One of the most iconic Speeches and Declarations in American history, the Gettysburg Address encapsulated the principles on which the United States was founded and placed the Civil War within the context of the struggle for freedom and equality for all. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) delivered the speech in 1863 on the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania battlefield, where the Union army had defeated the Confederate army four months previously.
